Essay on the history principles and development of editing.

4.6 Research and write a 1000 word essay on the history principles and development of editing.

The history of the film has had many changes up until today, which means that editing styles have changed. Film started with no editing at all.  The history principles and development has way improved because principles were used to make the audience emotional think about the film. The purpose of editing is to improve the bad things from the footages and editing more things into the action story. Editing can really help impact the mood of the story to the audience also video footages can entertain and interest the audience to grab the views attention by putting clips together and turn them into story.

These are the films that are edited in the past and putting more focus into it e.g.
·      Psycho (1960)
·      The Birds (1963)
·      Bonnie & Clyde (1967)
·      The French connection (1971)
·      Rocky (1976)
·      Star Wars (1977)
·      Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Editing has developed over time the history of the films has had changes up until today Editing now can slow time, speed up time, scare us, makes us laugh also there’s sad moments. Cutting has improved in the past because in the past cutting weren’t used as much in the past at all. Editing has much developed in time because also now can speed up e.g. fast and furious were everything move slowly and some parts of the film which the race goes fast and all the focus goes on the narrative on the subject that is ‘close up’ to focus on they emotional and feelings. Movies become more business in 1930. Editing also went on to add colors to films because in the past it was black and white films.

The first film editor was D.W Griffiths he was the first person to think of different camera shots angles. He used different specific techniques. D.W Griffiths trailer of the film birth of nation shows the different shots he used. He also invented the use of various shots including close up, when these were first brought into films people did not understand the use of these shots as they had came to the cinema to watch full people and open shots so they were not happy that they had paid just to see someone face.

The filmmakers started to realize that the use of different shots could make the audience react in certain ways, by using flash back to show previous happening, which would keep the audience to think about it and have insight into the film.

“The film L'Arrivée d'un train à la Ciotat by the Lumière brothers was one of the first films, which as you can see was shot in one angle. When the film first came out people who went to view it who had no experience of film and knew nothing about it were scared as they thought the train was actually coming towards them.” This can be very scary and funny because it scared the audience the shot took one place, which can be boring to watch.
“Film has been around since the early 1800’s, in the first films that were made there was no editing involved at all and were normally just shot from one angle and would be around a minute long. If we looked back into the first films that were made we would find them very simple. The first type of editing I have came across was essentially in camera editing where the operator would stop the camera for a brief moment so that they could move to a different shot or to move something into the shot, This type of interruption wouldn’t leave a mark or cause any damage to the nitrate film stock, this process was called resumption.” So many different shots angles used by now e.g. wide shot, 2 shot which shows 2 characters, single shots, long shots
Long shot this type of shot shows the entire location where the action took place is happening and what is the person doing. It’s often used at the start of the scene. Fade one shot slowly replaces the other, so that both are temporarily presenting in the screen it normally create softer cut usually it shows the relationship between the two characters in two images e.g. one character is thinking about the other
Eye line match are used too the eye line between two characters matches e.g. they are staring at each other you can see by the eye line matching, close up shot on a character which shows there emotion and enables the audience to feel more intimate with the character therefore more involved the story.

From my primary research I found out that in the old superman in the 1978 the cameras weren’t smooth enough than now e.g. man of steel from 2013 HD has been used jump cut in some clips and the music sound old also the editing was way improved if we compare them both together to 1978. The different are sound, effects, cuts, music also the man of steel 2013 looks more realistic than 1978. The man of steel they used different shots flash back to help the audience to flash back with the story.
From my qualitative research we made question to ask what other people think and give us some ideas and the result was that more people think remade movies in the future will be better than now because the improvement that are used will help the technology in the future.
