Intro to editing

• What is editing?
looking at the story, pushing the story straight forward creating story

• What is Elliptical editing?
Elliptical editing makes screen time shorter than story time by cutting out unnecessary actions

• What is ‘non-diagetic sound’?
non diagetic sound means that the sound that are edited & diagetic sound means the
sound that is now happening e.g. background voices pen clicking and people speaking
in the class.

• How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why?)
eye line matching shows that there's something in the floor which is the ring.

Hustle
• Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?
how complicit the story is
• What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?
this mean cutting back & forward

• What is Eye-line matching?
The eye line matching shows the big man stand up looking off screen down and the man is sitting down looking up which shows that they talking to each other
• Why do we cut to the other members of the group?
so we can see they faces and they reaction to the plan.

• What is a wipe?
To move the action in different time & to show the building and different sight

• What is the effect of using quick cuts?
To work quickly and make the story move along with quick cuts

b) Now watch ‘Editing: The Invisible Art’ and take notes:
• How can editing build tension and pace?
by zooming in and looking at they face reaction of the character

• What is crosscutting?
from long shot to another to see the reaction of the character

• What are reaction shots?
the reaction shots are to see the reaction of the character from one to another

• What is seamless editing?

• What is a jump cut?
changing the shooting to cut from person to another to check the attention of the character

• What is a flash back and what does it achieve?
flash back to show what happened and the action of it

• How can editing be used poetically?
